Let’s face it, I know you are tired of waking up every morning at 4 am to get to the gym to train your first client. I mean you just left the gym the night before at 8 pm and it feels like you were just there. Listen, I know you didn’t get into personal training for the money and you are passionate about helping transform peoples’s lives! But seriously, the long hours and early morning alarm wake ups are killing you! I have been there and I don’t care what anyone says it never gets easier! Don’t worry though I have a solution for you and it comes in the form of the Online Trainer Academy. The very first online personal trainer certification! Let me tell you a little bit about it and how it is going to help you ditch that 4 am alarm for good!
I have been in the fitness industry a long time and believe it or not my first online client came back when the only thing available to me was AOL dial up. Yes, you remember the saying, “You’ve Got Mail!” My first online client was a client who lived in Florida. You see when I first graduated from college I worked in my home state of Florida but eventually moved out to Texas to be with my girlfriend, and now wife. I had worked with this client one on one for a few months before I moved and the client didn’t want to lose me so I would email her a program every so many weeks and she would mail me a check. Yes, it was pre Pay-Pal and pre online pretty much anything. It worked for awhile and then she found another trainer locally and that was it. However, it always had me thinking about how could I continue to reach out and use the Internet to become an online personal trainer. As the years progressed and technology advanced so did online training. However, it hasn’t been until just recently that online training has become really popular and suitable for personal trainers to really build an online training business.
For me, I learned the hard way and went through trail and error to get to the point where I finally feel like I am able to build an scale an online personal training business. However, for you it doesn’t have to be that way. Why, well Jon Goodman has done an excellent job of putting together not just a course but an “academy” to help you become not only one of the very first certified online personal trainers but also help you build a lifestyle and online personal training business that allows you to continue to do what you love without trading hours for dollars. The rest of this post is going to be a review of the “Online Trainer Academy!”
So I am not sure how I ran across Jon Goodman. He may have Geo targeted me with a Facebook Ad but I ran across is book “Viralnomics” and I really bought into what he was talking about. From there I looked him up and started to read more of what he was dishing out and began to really like and trust him. I mean let’s face it there is so much hype and BS that people spew out these days sometimes it is hard to believe what they are saying is true or not. So, when I received one of Jon’s email one day talking about his upcoming “Online Personal Trainer Academy” I was intrigued. You see at this point I had had some success training clients online but I really didn’t have a system or plan to really scale my online training business. And even though I have an MBA I still didn’t really have the model down. That is until I became one of the first group of certified online personal trainers!
You see it wasn’t that I didn’t know what to do in terms of how to create programs or how to use the technology but more of how to get a system I could create that matched my target demo and how to scale it. Jon does an excellent job of laying it all out there in the text and online videos so you have clarity on the steps to take and action plans to implement to get you to reaching what he calls your “freedom number!” So without further ado here is my honest review!
Well according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, one definition of “academy” is, a society of learned persons organized to advance art, science, or literature. Well, like I said after I started to follow Jon Goodman and learn more about him I found out that the “Online Trainer Academy” derived and comprised of hundreds of personal trainers that Jon either coached or went through his first coaching program, which was the “1k a month program.” The course was constructed and designed to help personal trainers make an extra 1k a month in passive income to help them increase their income potential without having to trade more dollars for hours. Now, I did not go through that course so I can’t tell you exactly what it entailed but when you go through the academy Jon tells you about how he took what he learned form that and from hundreds of other trainers who went through the course to build upon and finally create the academy.
So, just like the definition states, the academy is really a group of personal trainers that got organized (PTDC) and then what was learned from that group became the first online personal training certification. Now, this certification isn’t your typical personal training certification. It is a mixture of business and fitness that helps solidify you as a qualified trainer who knows how to take your knowledge and scale it by using technology to reach out and transform lives regardless of location. But, before you decide if the academy is right for you let’s explore if online training is even right for you.
You’ve coached people successfully offline for at least a few years. I’m not trying to be some old curmudgeon or something and telling you that you can’t do something if you’re young…heck, I started coaching and training when I was only 21 and in college.
But for you to stand out in the market, experience matters. For you to know how to solve certain problems that are more challenging from a far, experience matters. I strongly believe that it’s much easier to set the foundation for being great at online coaching if you’ve done it in person for a while…and if that is your goal the academy will help you lay the groundwork and when you are ready it will be there for you.
You want to expand or evolve. I often talk about adding a second stream of income. I also am a big fan of taking risk that is high yield and low cost. As Jon mentions what would your life be like if you could add another 1k to 2k a month in income a month without having to add more time in the gym be to your lifestyle. Plus, to be honest become an online trainer is going to do so much more than just bring you income. By becoming an online trainer you are going to become that much better at being a transformation coach. Trust me you learn what I am talking about once you take the plunge!
You’re not tech / online averse. I’m not exactly a tech whiz, but I’m very comfortable connecting with people via email, social media, etc. And I’m also ok to use some simple technology tools to facilitate my clients’ progress. If you’re going to go online – you’ll have to do the same. Don’t worry the academy certification will help you with this. And, the simple “5 a day” on Facebook is a game changer. You learn that in the course!
You’re willing to treat this at least like it is an extension of your personal training business. Sure, you can get the certification and it will help you coach clients who’ve moved out of your area and stuff like that, which will more than make your investment in the academy back…but really, this was designed for coaches who want to have a greater impact on transforming lives and help you grow your fitness business. Whether you want it to be 10% or 100% – you’ll have to treat it like a business for the time you spend on it in order for it to work. Don’t worry the model on setting up your business will walk you through this!
The following is the pricing structure for customers of the Academy.
Total investment is $1,500 but users save $200 if they are on the early bird list and $200 if they pay in full.
$1,100 – Paid in full and on early bird list (if purchased from Feb 21 – Feb 23)
$1,300 – Payment plan and on early bird list (if purchased from Feb 21 – Feb 23) (5 monthly payments of $260) $1,300 – Paid in full after early bird deadline
$1,500 – Payment plan after early bird deadline (6 monthly payments of $250)
Should I Enroll?
I know as a personal trainer and fitness instructor money can be tight. And there are so many other certifications that will enhance your skill set as a trainer so you may be wondering if it is worth it. Again as I said before online training is not for everyone. If you are just staring out I would learn to become and master offline training before you dive into online training. However, if you have been at it for awhile and wanting to gain some freedom and flexibility while at the same time still doing your passion, which is transforming lives then go for getting to certified to train online. Trust me there are other coaches and courses out there charging way more than the investment in the academy and you will not get even half the value. trust me I have worked with some coaches and gone through some courses that make claims to be the best for trainers looking to create an online income. Nothing at this point compares to the “Online Trainer Academy!”
If you have questions and what to speak directly with me about the certification you can call me or email me at Dave@davemcgarry.com and I am happy to answer any questions.
In health and wealth,
I was taken aback by all the comments and feedback that everyone left on my previous video. After reflecting and thinking about how I could use my “super power” I have decided to open up my “Ultimate Transformation Program” again. Watch the video to see if you might be a fit for the program!
Life is not always a straight line and sometimes you have to go through the trials and tribulations before you truly find yourself. Well after getting certified to coach at Orangetheory fitness I fell back in love with coaching and realized my super power is motivating people to reach their fullest potential!

Remember the 80’s hit song by the Pointer Sisters, “I am so excited that I just can’t hide it I am about to lose control and I think I like it” well that is what I am singing but changing the words to match the title of this post! Sorry if you are now singing it in and it is stuck in your head! Oh, mom and family before you pick up the phone to call and see if I am ok hang on as I am going to explain to you why I like being a failure!
Why do I like being a failure? Well several years ago I read a book by John Maxwell called “Failing Forward.” In it Maxwell shares stories about famous people who countlessly failed before they hit it big. He also goes on to say that the important part to failure is to “fail forward” meaning to use the failure to your advantage by taking away the key lessons that will help you grow and move ahead in your endeavor. This post is not going to be a book review but I merely bring it up because most of us look at failure as a negative thing and not a positive thing. Although it was many years ago that I read it that learning from it is prevalent for my reflections today. If you would like to read it here is the link to Amazon to get a copy Failing Forward: Turning Mistakes into Stepping Stones for Success.
Ok, as I just mentioned the learnings from that book play more of a role in my life today than they did when I first picked it up and read it cover to cover! Now I know you are asking yourself, “but why would you be ok with being a failure?” To be honest I would not say that this acceptance came easy because up until about 4 years ago things were running pretty smoothly with my life and career. I wouldn’t say that during that time I achieved all my goals but for the most part I did. Then, the Great Recession hit and I found myself on a new journey. I was fired from a job I truly loved and I now found myself at a crossroad. Do I want to go and try and find a job or do I want to try and go out on my own and become an entrepreneur? I chose the latter and let me tell you being an entrepreneur is not easy. I guess if it was everyone would do it. Plus, I be the first to admit I did not grow up selling baseball cards or setting up lemonade stands to make money. My life and passion revolved around sports. I loved playing football and baseball, which led me to get my Bachelor’s in Exercise Science. Now, naturally you would think that my first entrepreneurial gig would be to open a gym, however, my wife and I agreed that I would try to utilize the Internet and build a fitness business online.
So, I headed out on this new journey excited and scared but nonetheless I moved ahead. I had created a company called www.workingmomworkouts.com that provided an online fitness membership site that working moms would get a weekly program and lesson from me. After a year and half I had had some success but realized that the space I was in was not a great fit for me. I just didn’t have the passion to continue to move forward with it so in the meantime I had started to work with other fitness professionals building their websites and helping them get traffic to their site (SEO). This led me to start thinking I could help other business owners with their digital marketing so I started a local digital marketing company. Things started off a little slow but as with any new endeavor the more I got out there and met people the more success I had. However, I still didn’t feel complete and I began to start the thinking process of my entrepreneurial journey!
So, I don’t know if it because I am wiser (just turned 41) or God laid it on my heart but about 6 months ago I started to really think about what my purpose is in life and what God wants me to do to glorify him. I believe I can trace it back to the time I spent in Colorado this past summer. It really is amazing what getting away from your day to day surroundings and into nature can do for you. Spending time hiking and biking in mountains made me realize I miss coaching and helping others transform their lives through fitness.
Call it coincidence or destiny but right after this trip I got a call from a good friend of mine asking if I would like to meet for coffee . She told me she an opportunity that I may be interested in. The next week we met and the opportunity she had for me was to become certified as an Orange Theory Fitness Coach. I had heard about OTF but had never taken a class. I agreed to take the class and if I liked it I would let her know if I wanted to join her team. Well, if you follow me on Facebook you probably already know the outcome and that I am now teaching classes.
I realized now after four years of being away from fitness I missed it and I also realized that the strengths and skills that I was born with were not being used to my fullest potential. I was born to motivate and coach and it was time to get back to my roots. Now does this mean I have to give up my other passions? Does it mean I am a failure at building a local marketing agency focusing on small businesses? No, what I have decided is to make my focus completely on health and fitness. So that means the digital marketing agency I started will be now focusing on helping fitness professionals, gym owners and others in the health and wellness space. What I hope is I can use my motivation to transform lives while I teach classes and use my business and marketing skills to help other health and fitness owners transform other lives by helping then grow their business.
You see these failures I have encountered on my entrepreneurial journey have been great lessons! Without them I would have never gotten back to the asking myself, “How do I want to spend the second half of my life” and figure out my “why.” My goal is to take the lessons learned over the last four years and “Fail Forward” just like Maxwell describes in his book! I hope you will come along for the ride as I plan to use this blog as my platform to share my experiences and knowledge for others that are struggling to really find their calling! The best advice I can give you is don’t quit and fail forward!
I would love to here your journey. What failures have you encountered and did you Fail Forward?
To Your Success,
Happy New Year! I know it is the eighth day of January as of this writing but I asked my wife at what date do you stop saying Happy New Year and she said. ” If you have not seen or spoken to them in the New Year you can say it.” So, my wife is always right So with that being said if this is my first encounter with you then I am wishing you a Happy New Year!
Ok, with that out of the way let’s get to the message I want to share with you today, which is setting a theme for your yearly plan. Most of us by now have either set resolutions or goals for the upcoming year but have you thought about your “why” behind it? For years I have always set goals for myself and some years they are bigger goals than other years but it wasn’t until last year that I took the advice of a guy I follow online and come up with a theme for my goals. At first I did not put much stock into it but as I started to think about what would make 2104 an AWESOME year a central focus continued to emerge as to what I wanted to accomplish and why I wanted to accomplish. It really helped me push through some of the tough and challenging times that occurs throughout an entire year. So, with that being said as I sat down over the last few weeks thinking about a theme for 2015 two major topics continued to surface. I kept hearing and listening to thought leaders talk about success and significance, which led me to to research online on the particular subject.
So what exactly does “Success to Significance mean anyway? I am glad you asked because I want to share it with you in the hopes that if you are in the same boat as me this might help you in your life’s journey.
Before I tell you exactly what “Success to Significance” means let me give you a little back story on how I came use this theme for my 2015 year plan. As I mentioned last year was the first year I created a “theme” for my goals and it really helped me throughout the year. So naturally as I started to think about what I wanted to really go big and make 2015 a year that I made a difference. I don’t know if this is because I am going to be 41 or what but I just felt that I needed to really make a difference in the lives of people around me. And as I started the process of coming up with my theme I started to hear people like my pastor talk about being significant and I also listened to a podcast of someone talking about the term “Success to Significance,” which then led me to research more on the term, “Success to Significance.” What I found was a book by Bob Buford called “Halftime.”
In his book “Halftime” Bob talks about how he achieved great success in business but at his mid forties he began to feel unsatisfied and knew there had to be more to life then business and making lots of money. It was at this critical point he began to ask himself some really deep questions and came to the realization that the time he had remaining here on earth he wanted to make a difference and leave a legacy. I knew after the first few chapters this is what I wanted to make 2015 and beyond be for my life and that is how I decided to solidify “Success to Significance” as my theme.
I know you still may have questions about what it means but here is what I plan for it to mean for me. As I approach my 41st birthday I don’t know if I am half way through my life, as no one does, but after several years of really trying to find myself I know that going forward I want to no longer focus on just being successful but also be significant. With that being said I plan on using my strengths to give back to my family, friends and community. The game plan is still not polished but I plan to use this site, DaveMcGarry.com, as a place where I can motivate and inspire you to go after your dreams and live a life full of energy and positivity.
Well that is all for now but I would love to hear from you. Do you create themes for your yearly goals? If so, I would love to hear what it is.
To your success,
