Happy New Year! I know it is the eighth day of January as of this writing but I asked my wife at what date do you stop saying Happy New Year and she said. ” If you have not seen or spoken to them in the New Year you can say it.” So, my wife is always right 🙂 So with that being said if this is my first encounter with you then I am wishing you a Happy New Year!

Ok, with that out of the way let’s get to the message I want to share with you today, which is setting a theme for your yearly plan. Most of us by now have either set resolutions or goals for the upcoming year but have you thought about your “why” behind it? For years I have always set goals for myself and some years they are bigger goals than other years but it wasn’t until last year that I took the advice of a guy I follow online and come up with a theme for my goals. At first I did not put much stock into it but as I started to think about what would make 2104 an AWESOME year a central focus continued to emerge as to what I wanted to accomplish and why I wanted to accomplish. It really helped me push through some of the tough and challenging times that occurs throughout an entire year. So, with that being said as I sat down over the last few weeks thinking about a theme for 2015 two major topics continued to surface. I kept hearing and listening to thought leaders talk about  success and significance, which led me to to research online on the particular subject.

Dave McGarry 2015 year goalsSo what exactly does “Success to Significance mean anyway?  I am glad you asked because I want to share it with you in the hopes that if you are in the same boat as me this might help you in your life’s journey.

Before I tell you exactly what “Success to Significance” means let me give you a little back story on how I came use this theme for my 2015 year plan. As I mentioned last year was the first year I created a “theme” for my goals and it really helped me throughout the year. So naturally as I started to think about what I wanted to really go big and make 2015 a year that I made a difference. I don’t know if this is because I am going to be 41 or what but I just felt that I needed to really make a difference in the lives of people around me. And as I started the process of coming up with my theme I started to hear people like my pastor talk about being significant and I also listened to a podcast of someone talking about the term “Success to Significance,” which then led me to research more on the term, “Success to Significance.” What I found was a book by Bob Buford called “Halftime.”

In his book “Halftime” Bob talks about how he achieved great success in business but at his mid forties he began to feel unsatisfied and knew there had to be more to life then business and making lots of money. It was at this critical point he began to ask himself some really deep questions and came to the realization that the time he had remaining here on earth he wanted to make a difference and leave a legacy. I knew after the first few chapters this is what I wanted to make 2015 and beyond be for my life and that is how I decided to solidify “Success to Significance” as my theme.

I know you still may have questions about what it means but here is what I plan for it to mean for me. As I approach my 41st birthday I don’t know if I am half way through my life, as no one does, but after several years of really trying to find myself I know that going forward I want to no longer focus on just being successful but also be significant. With that being said I plan on using my strengths to give back to my family, friends and community. The game plan is still not polished but I plan to use this site, DaveMcGarry.com, as a place where I can motivate and inspire you to go after your dreams and live a life full of energy and positivity.

Well that is all for now but I would love to hear from you. Do you create themes for your yearly goals? If so, I would love to hear what it is.

To your success,

Dave
